How it works
For a straight layout, every rectangle is counted as complete columns and rows. Auto orientation compares the tile as entered and rotated 90°, then keeps the option that needs fewer whole tiles. Measured net area and diagonal work use the tile-plus-joint module instead.
The cutting allowance is added after all surfaces have been counted, and only then is the project rounded to full packs. Purchased area uses the nominal tile face rather than pretending grout is material in the carton; optional cost is full packs multiplied by price.

This tile calculator combines up to three rectangular floors or walls with an additional measured area. For straight work it counts complete rows and columns, compares tile rotation, adds the cutting allowance, then converts the project into full packs, spare stock and cost.
Rows and columns are more honest than total area
The last tile at an edge is a complete purchasing unit even when the installation only needs a narrow strip. The calculator therefore finds columns from the surface length and rows from its width, then multiplies them. Dividing room area by tile area hides those perimeter cuts and can understate the order.
Every added surface is counted separately because an offcut from one wall is not automatically suitable for another. Repeated walls can share one set of dimensions and a quantity; irregular work or a surface with openings can be entered as an already measured net area.
Rotating rectangular tile changes the cuts
Turning a 600 × 300 mm format through 90° can remove a complete row or column. Auto orientation tests both directions on each rectangle and keeps the one requiring fewer whole tiles; force a direction when a grain, graphic or design line matters more than the smaller order.
A diagonal layout cannot be described by the same rectangular grid, so that mode uses tile-plus-joint module area and relies on the entered cutting allowance. Fifteen percent is only a starting point: niches, many corners, pattern matching and fragile material need a project-specific layout.
Round packs once for the complete project
The calculator combines the layout count for every surface, adds cutting and repair stock, and only then divides by pieces per pack. That lets spare pieces serve the whole project instead of rounding each wall to another full carton.
Purchased coverage uses nominal tile face area in full packs; grout is not material contained in the carton. Entering a pack price adds a transparent full-pack material cost and exposes the stock left after installation.

How much tile does a bathroom need? expand_more
Add the floor and rectangular walls as separate surfaces, using quantity for matching walls. Enter a wall with a door, boxing or niches as measured net area when a simple rectangle would misrepresent it. Complex bathrooms still need a manual check of critical rows and a larger allowance.
Why can a row-and-column result exceed an area result? expand_more
Area arithmetic assumes every offcut can be reused with no loss. Rows and columns recognize that each edge needs a whole tile before it is cut. The difference is strongest on small surfaces using large-format tile.
What does auto orientation do? expand_more
It compares the entered tile direction with a 90° rotation on every rectangular surface. It first chooses fewer tiles and, on a tie, the grid with less overrun beyond the surface edges.
How should openings and irregular shapes be entered? expand_more
Opening position affects whether cuts can be reused, so subtracting area alone cannot produce an exact grid. Split the shape into useful rectangles, enter the remaining net area separately, and dry-lay critical rows before ordering.
