How it works
For metric products, dry-mix weight is area multiplied by the stated kg/m² rate. US thin-set is usually labelled by approximate square feet per 50 lb bag, so that version divides the area by bag coverage instead. Both paths round the order up to whole bags.
Trowel size is only a starting profile. An uneven substrate, a low trowel angle and back-buttering large tile all increase use. Lift a freshly set tile to verify coverage, and replace the preset with the exact figure from the product data sheet.

A tile adhesive calculator turns tiled area and the rate for a selected notched trowel into dry-mix weight and whole bags. The profiles start from manufacturer tables, but substrate flatness, trowel angle and back-buttering determine actual use.
Tile size suggests the notch; the notch drives consumption
A 6 mm notch is a common starting point for 10–20 cm tile, 8 mm for 20–30 cm, and 10–12 mm for large formats. The current KNAUF table assigns representative dry-mix rates of 2.2, 2.9 and 4.7 kg/m² to those three profiles.
Those figures are not geometric constants. The trowel is held at an angle, the ridges must collapse under the tile, and transfer is checked by lifting a freshly placed tile. If coverage is inadequate, use a larger notch or apply mortar to both the substrate and tile back.
Round to bags only after adding the allowance
Multiply area by the stated rate first, then add an allowance for mixing, material left in the bucket and back-buttering. Divide that weight by the bag size and round up once at the end; rounding intermediate values only inflates the error.
Substrate flatness moves the result more than small differences between calculators. Tile adhesive is not an economical way to correct major variation: level the base first, then replace the profile rate with the figure on the exact bag you are buying.

At 2.9 kg/m² with an 8 mm notch, the net weight is 58 kg. A ten-percent allowance brings that to 63.8 kg, so the order is 3 whole 25 kg bags.
How much waste should I allow for tile adhesive?expand_more
Ten percent is a practical starting point on a flat substrate with ordinary tile. Large format with back-buttering, a deeply keyed tile back or an uneven base uses more; confirm with a test placement and the product data sheet.
Can trowel size be selected from tile size alone?expand_more
Tile size gives a starting recommendation, not the final answer. Comb the mortar, set and lift one tile: if the ridges have not collapsed and transfer is incomplete, increase the notch or back-butter the tile.
