How it works
Ready-mix compound equals finished drywall area divided by 100, multiplied by the editable gallons-per-100-ft² rate and the allowance. The result is then rounded to whole pails for a purchase quantity.
Joint finishing and a full skim coat are separate operations. The joint profile also estimates tape; the skim-only profile does not. Product weight, finish level, corners, bead and applicator technique can all move actual coverage, so the selected product estimate remains the controlling input.

This drywall mud calculator estimates ready-mix joint compound in gallons and whole pails from finished drywall square footage. Separate profiles cover taping and finishing joints or a full-surface skim coat, and every rate remains editable.
Joint finishing and skim coating are separate operations
Joint finishing uses compound at tape, fasteners, joints, corners and bead. A skim coat spreads a thin layer over the full surface. If a finish specification requires both, calculate each operation separately and add the purchase quantities rather than treating one preset as the whole system.
The joint profile starts at 1 gallon per 100 ft² and estimates 37 ft of tape per 100 ft². The skim-only profile starts at 0.9 gallon per 100 ft², based on USG's planning figure of two 4.5 gallon pails per 1,000 ft² for an ultralight skim application.
Product and finish details control coverage
Ready-mix weight, finish level, bead, corners, tools and applicator technique all change usage. The gallons-per-100-ft² field is therefore an explicit input: replace the preset with the selected product estimator or a measured first area.
The calculator reports required gallons before packaging, then rounds up to the entered pail size. Purchased volume and leftover compound expose the packaging effect instead of hiding it in a generic allowance.

At 1 gallon per 100 ft² plus a 10% allowance, the estimate is 11 gallons. With 4.5 gallon pails, round up to 3 pails containing 13.5 gallons.
Does this calculate a Level 5 finish? expand_more
The skim profile estimates the full-surface coat only. If the Level 5 system also requires taped and finished joints, calculate that operation separately and follow the specified product system.
Can this estimate powdered setting compound? expand_more
No. This page purchases ready-mix by liquid volume. Powdered setting compounds are sold by weight and must use the yield or coverage stated on their own data sheet.
