How it works

Volume is calculated from the selected geometry or quantity. Compaction and purchasing allowances are applied separately. Weight is only available when you provide density.

volume = area × depth; weight = volume × density

How the Sand Calculator works

This sand calculator estimates cubic yards for a measured bedding or fill layer. Density is optional for volume calculations and required when converting an order to weight or starting from a known weight.

Area multiplied by depth

For 300 ft² at 2 in deep, volume is 300 × (2/12) = 50 ft³, or 1.852 yd³. A 10% allowance brings the order estimate to 2.037 yd³. Enter the average depth of the layer, rather than the shallowest point.

Keep volume and weight consistent

Weight equals volume multiplied by the supplied bulk density. Moisture, grading and packing condition affect that input. The calculator deliberately leaves density blank until you provide a product figure.

A compaction addition increases the geometric volume before the purchasing allowance. Use it only when the supplier has explained how a finished layer relates to delivered loose sand. Bedding sand, gravel and masonry mortar are different orders; calculate them separately.

FAQ

How much sand covers one square foot? expand_more

At 1 inch depth, the volume is 1/12 ft³. Multiply by the full area, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.

Are tons metric or US tons? expand_more

The US-unit result uses short tons of 2,000 lb; the metric result uses tonnes of 1,000 kg. Pounds or kilograms are also shown.

Can I estimate sand from a truck weight? expand_more

Yes, choose known weight and enter the bulk density for that delivery condition.
