How it works

Material weight is the surface area multiplied by average coat thickness and the product rate in pounds per square foot for each inch. The US profile supplies a market-size bag and a representative rate, but the exact product data sheet always wins.

Use average thickness across the whole surface. Hollows move the total quickly. The allowance covers material left in the mixing tub, droppage, tooling and sanding loss; it does not replace the manufacturer's application limits.

This US plaster calculator converts square feet and average coat thickness into pounds and whole market-size bags. Its profiles cover gypsum basecoat plaster, portland-cement stucco, setting-type joint compound and veneer finish plaster.

US materials need US profiles, not converted bag labels

The unit math is exact, but the product is local. A 30 kg gypsum-plaster bag converts to 66.1 lb, which is not the same thing as a 50 lb US bag. Base-coat stucco is commonly packaged in 80 lb bags, while dry setting compound is often sold in 25 lb bags. The calculator therefore changes both the units and the representative package when the market changes.

Rates are normalized to pounds per square foot for each inch of coat. That keeps one formula usable for a 1/16 in veneer finish, a 1/8 in compound fill and a 3/8 in stucco coat. Always replace the profile rate with the exact coverage or yield from the product data sheet when you have selected a brand.

Thickness and product type cannot be separated

Conventional gypsum basecoat and stucco build wall geometry; joint compound and veneer finish do different work at much smaller thicknesses. Setting-type joint compound is useful for filling, but some products specifically exclude thin skim coats. Ready-mixed skim compounds are often sold in pails and should be estimated from the pail's stated coverage rather than treated as dry plaster.

Measure several points and enter the average coat. Subtract large doors and windows, then add a practical waste allowance for the mixing pan, hawk, tools and sanding. The result is an order estimate, not permission to exceed the manufacturer's maximum thickness per coat.

At a 1/2 in average coat and a representative rate of 4.17 lb/ft²·in, the net weight is 834 lb. With a ten-percent allowance the order quantity is about 917 lb, or 19 whole 50 lb bags.

How many 80 lb bags of base-coat stucco cover 400 sq ft?expand_more

An 80 lb bag covering about 25 sq ft at 3/8 in works out to 16 bags before waste. With a ten-percent allowance, order 18 whole bags. Uneven masonry and lath can increase the actual yield loss.

Can I use the joint-compound profile for a skim coat?expand_more

Only if the selected product permits it. The setting-type profile starts at 1/8 in because common setting compounds warn against thin skim applications. For a ready-mixed skim product, use its published pail coverage instead of assuming the dry-compound preset applies.
