Tile Calculator
Tiles and packs for a floor or wall in square feet.
How it works
The calculator divides floor or wall area by the tile face plus its grout joint, then rounds up to whole tiles. US inputs use feet for the room and inches for the tile and joint; the arithmetic is converted before the count is made.
Ten percent is a practical allowance for a straight layout. Diagonal patterns, many corners or fragile large-format tile may need 15% or more. Enter the exact number of tiles in a carton so the order rounds up to real packs.

How the Tile Calculator works
This US tile calculator estimates individual tiles and full cartons from room dimensions in feet and tile dimensions in inches. It includes the grout joint, a cutting allowance and the exact number of pieces sold in each carton.
Tile count and carton count are different rounding steps
The room area is divided by the tile face plus one grout joint, then the allowance is applied and the tile count is rounded up. Only after that is the count divided by pieces per carton. This prevents a rounded carton-coverage label from hiding a missing tile near a boundary.
The purchased-coverage result uses whole cartons, so it exposes the stock left after installation. Keep matching tile for future repairs because later production lots can differ in shade and caliber.
Choose the allowance from the layout
Ten percent is a practical starting point for a straight layout in a reasonably square room. A diagonal pattern, many corners, niches or fragile large-format material can move the allowance to 15% or more.
Do not treat the grout-joint field as a substitute for an actual layout. Dry-lay critical rows, keep cut pieces at the edges and confirm the manufacturer's minimum joint and substrate requirements before setting tile.
FAQ
How many 12 × 12 in tiles cover an 80 sq ft floor? expand_more
With a 1/8 in joint and ten-percent allowance, the calculator estimates 87 whole tiles. At 12 tiles per carton, that rounds up to 8 cartons.
Does tile size include the grout joint? expand_more
Enter the manufactured tile dimensions and the planned joint separately. The calculator adds one joint to each module before dividing the room area.
How much extra tile should I buy? expand_more
Start at 10% for a simple straight layout and 15% for diagonal or cut-heavy work. Complex patterns and material with high shade variation may need a project-specific layout and selection allowance.
