How it works
For a straight layout, every rectangle is counted as complete columns and rows. Auto orientation compares the tile as entered and rotated 90°, then keeps the option that needs fewer whole tiles. Measured net area and diagonal work use the tile-plus-joint module instead.
The cutting allowance is added after all surfaces have been counted, and only then is the project rounded to full packs. Purchased area uses the nominal tile face rather than pretending grout is material in the carton; optional cost is full packs multiplied by price.

This US tile calculator combines up to three rectangular floors or walls in feet with additional measured square footage. It counts rows and columns for straight work, compares a 90-degree tile rotation, then estimates full cartons, spare pieces and optional material cost.
Count the grid before the cartons
For each rectangle, the calculator rounds the length to complete tile columns and the width to complete rows. That represents perimeter cuts more honestly than dividing total square footage by a tile module. Multiple surfaces are kept separate so their edge cuts do not disappear into one area total.
After all surfaces are combined, the cutting allowance is added and the tile count is divided by exact pieces per carton. Purchased square footage uses nominal tile face area, and the spare-piece result exposes the additional repair stock created by carton rounding.
Orientation and pattern are separate decisions
Auto orientation checks a rectangular tile as entered and rotated 90 degrees on every surface, selecting the direction that needs fewer complete pieces. Force the direction when veining, grain or a design line controls the layout.
Diagonal mode uses tile-plus-joint module area because ordinary rows and columns no longer describe the angled perimeter cuts. Its 15% default is a planning allowance, not a substitute for dry-laying critical rows around corners, openings and transitions.
Add several surfaces to one order
Floors and simple walls can be entered as separate rectangles, and identical walls can use the quantity field. Irregular surfaces and walls with openings can be measured as net square footage and added to the same order.
The project rounds to cartons only once. Entering the carton price produces the full material cost without treating a partial carton as purchasable.

How many 12 × 12 in tiles cover an 80 sq ft floor? expand_more
A 10 × 8 ft rectangle with a 1/8 in joint forms 10 columns by 8 rows, or 80 layout tiles. A ten-percent allowance raises the order to 88 tiles. At 12 per carton, buy 8 cartons containing 96 tiles, with 8 pieces beyond the allowance-adjusted requirement.
Why is the result different from square footage divided by tile area? expand_more
The grid counts a complete tile wherever an edge cut begins. Pure area arithmetic assumes all offcuts fit somewhere else with no loss, which is least reliable on small surfaces and large-format tile.
What does automatic tile rotation change? expand_more
It compares the row-and-column count in both 90-degree orientations for each rectangle. It cannot choose a visual direction for veining or pattern, so force the planned orientation when appearance controls.
How much extra tile should I buy? expand_more
The form starts at 10% for straight work and switches to 15% for diagonal work. Increase it for complex perimeters, pattern matching, breakage risk or repair stock specified by the project.
